The Truth Behind Fitness Infomercials- Las Vegas Personal Training

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

I have been pretty harsh on fitness infomercials in the past.  My shake weight video, talking badly about P90X, and all these other random workouts on TV.  But I’m going to take a step back from that, and go the other direction with this short post.  I’m going to decode infomercial fitness workouts for you.  From the popular, to the weird.  Very quickly.

Ok.  here it goes.  When you see an infomercial claiming to be the next great program for you to get in shape at home, it’s probably not the end all be all to workouts.  These workouts include p90X, Insanity, TurboFire, and on and on.  It might actually be a decent, or great workout, but most likely it’s not the best for you.  Basically what they are doing, for the most part, is giving YOU accountability.  Something you haven’t given yourself on your own, or you wouldn’t be looking into these infomercials  in the first place.  But what it does is tell you to do this, on this day, and that on that day.  It’s essentially giving you a schedule.  It’s giving someone who doesn’t have consistency and any intensity in their fitness program, both.  If you are the general public, who exercises on a time to time basis, this will work well for you.  It gives you a general progressive workout to try for an established amount of time, and a general diet to follow.  Great for the majority of people in the United States, since most of them don’t have any sort of consistent, efficient workout routine.  So I will have to say, these programs hold some value, and if you do nothing, would benefit you greatly in the goal of weight loss or muscle gain.

Next I want to move to ab devices, which I see all over TV.  Usually those results you see on the Ab Dolly, or the Perfect Sit-up commercials, aren’t from that device alone.  They’ll tell you in the fine print that this is in conjunction with a regular exercise routine and nutrition plan.  For the money, you are better off getting one of the above mentioned workout programs.

Then you have things like the Shake Weight.  Hmm..  I don’t know what to say about this.  I’m torn, because it isn’t useless, as, you can get a little pump by “shakin’ it”, but it’s not going to get you in shape.  The commercial blows the effectiveness of this out of proportion.  It doesn’t really offer any functional results, unless you are a call girl.  But, for $20, it’s fun to say you have one.

There you go.  My quick take on some of these infomercials.  Bottom line, if you don’t do ANYTHING, you’ll benefit from doing SOMETHING consistently, whether it’s from TV or not.

Las Vegas Personal Training- The Only Thing In The Way Of You In Shape

Monday, April 4th, 2011

Good LORD is it beautiful in Las Vegas right now!  It’s about 75 degrees and sunny. Can’t ask for much more than that.  Well, A hot tub at my house would be nice, so I guess you can, but I’ll take it.  I have a break from my personal training clients right now, so I thought I’d write a short post about obstacles to overcome in the journey of health and fitness.  One obstacle in particular.  This one, you can probably apply to many other aspects of life as well.  Think of all the things that can get in the way of you not being in the best shape possible.  Time, money, no good food choices, kids, work, your peers, your family, your girlfriend or boyfriend, your dog.  The list goes on and on.  Maybe it’s you.  Not any of these other things.  People tend to take the easy way out on these things, regardless of what it is.  It takes discipline to go get a great body.  That’s not a lie.  But it’s easy to use excuses like time, which is my all time favorite excuse, because everyone has the same amount of hours in the day, as the reason for their shortcomings in whatever goal they are trying to aspire to.  This may come off harsh, but maybe it’s you, who spent the last 20 minutes surfing the internet, stuck on facebook, when you could have gotten one of the best workouts of your life in.  Maybe it’s you who could have been focusing on being productive, instead of arguing on how much time you don’t have to be productive.  Don’t blame your dog.  Don’t blame your kids.  There are plenty of people who work two jobs, have three kids, and STILL find time to get a 20-40 minute workout in 3-4 times a week.  If you are trying to reach your goals, they aren’t going to come with an easy way out.

Working Out In The Air? Las Vegas Personal Trainer Explains

TRX Camp!

I am back in Las Vegas from San Diego.  That was a great trip.  I was there to go through a certification course on sports medicine on the TRX Suspension Trainer.  I went for a few days to learn about corrective exercise on the TRX.  If you have an injury, chronic pain, or reconstructive surgery, we learned about what we can do for you.  The great thing about the TRX is that you can virtually take ANYONE, and give them a total body workout.  Doesn’t matter if they are new to fitness, personal training, and working out, or if they are in fact a personal trainer themselves.  People from grandmothers, to NBA athletes, and MMA fighters can use the TRX, for a challenging workout at their own fitness level.  The seminar I attended took a bunch of different cases, and educated us on how to use the TRX to design a workout for each individual.  You can take someone with degenerative disc disease, and design a complete rebuilding program for them.  You could take an athlete, with a ligament tear, and bring them back to health, better and stronger than before.  I get excited when I talk about this device, because there are so many options while using it.  You can do plyometrics on the TRX, you can KILL your abs, and you can gain flexibility, all in the same workout.  I don’t normally hawk products, but this is one, I think everyone should own.  It’s very portable.  I take it everywhere with me.  You can use it anywhere in your house where there is a door.  I have used it in a hotel, and I’ll post a video for you guys next time.  If you go to the website, you’ll take a look at the $190 price tag and think that’s pricey, but when you think about it, this is REALLY the only piece of equipment you will ever need.  No.  I don’t own stock in it, but I do find the value of this wonderful piece of equipment. You can check out the videos on youtube, or their website at Fitness Anywhere.  I myself, train certain people solely on the TRX, and I also run a TRX Camp on Sundays in Las Vegas, which is my favorite workout.  If you have the chance, check out a class, or see if you can get your own customized workout!

What Gym Should You Work Out At? The Opinion of a Personal Trainer

Monday, January 17th, 2011

img 11 300x130 What Gym Should You Work Out At? The Opinion of a Personal Trainer

There are all kinds of gyms in Las Vegas.  There are meathead gyms, social fitness centers, money hungry corporate gyms, and sole owner personal training studios (like mine).    This, for the most part, applies to all areas of the country, so most people know what I’m talking about, unless you live in Iowa where most people have only one or two options for places to go to work out.  Let’s take a look at a few of these places, and maybe you’ll figure out which one you fit in.

If you are looking to actually get in shape, and not find a gilfriend or boyfriend, you actually have a few options.  In my opinion, a small personal training studio like mine is the best option.  I know, I know, I’m biased.  Think about this for a minute though.  At a studio like mine, it’s basically you, and the personal trainer.  You are there to work out, and they are there to get you in shape.    A lot of sweat, and a lot of heavy breathing, but for all the right reasons.  Of course this is the pricey option, but guess what.  It’s also the most successful.  When people invest money, into getting a personal trainer they don’t want to just flush it all down the drain.  When you pay for a gym membership, I don’t know the actual numbers, but I am guessing more than %60 of the people who join, use the gym less than 5 times a month, because the rates are so low,  it’s not as if you even notice it in your bank account.  One thing I will say about a personal training studio that may not work out for some people, is they don’t have the vast array of machines.  But, if you are working with the right trainer, all you need is a bench some dumbells, and some effort.  Another benefit of a personal training studio is that you just have to show up and do the work.  You don’t have to think of the exercises in your workout, your personal trainer does.  In fact, your personal trainer designs everything you do as far as exercise goes.  This can be very benficial to those who are looking for a stress reduction, as well as those looking to get in shape.  I could go on and on about this, but if you really want to get in shape, this is a no brainer.

The next best thing, is to me, a smaller gym.  There are a lot of Anytime Fitness’ in Las Vegas, as there are throughout the country.  I joined one in Geneva, Illinois, during my best friends wedding.  I wanted to work out, and it was right across the street.  These smaller franchise gyms charge a bit more than the big commercial gyms, but they do so, to make you happier with their customer service.  At these smaller gyms, you kind of have a family feeling about them.  Most people are there to literally work out, and become familiar with the other members, because usually there aren’t many members packed into the gym.  At the same time, everyone has a mutual respect for everyone else, and working out, is the main reason to come to a gym like this.  There are no frills, just machines, dumbells, personal trainers, and you. You don’t get caught up sipping a protein shake and discussing last nights debauchery at the latest club.

Then there are the other options.  We have a big one here in Las Vegas, which will remain nameless.  There are a few locations throughout the city, and it has rightfully earned the “club” part of it’s name.  This place is not condusive, to me for the optimum workout, because, a lot of people there, go there just to see people.  People spend more time on their cell phones, talking to each other, and in a full face of makeup, than actually working out.  There are about 100 personal trainers there, which is good, since there are about 5000 members there at any one time.  The only problem is that %75 of the trainers, aren’t really practicing a healthy lifestyle.  There are usually a few great trainers, and you can see that because they are always busy.  Another positive about this place is they have literally TONS of equipment.  They are also open 24 hours.  Clubs like this in your city may not have the hours we do here in Las Vegas, which is unfortunate.  This place also comes stocked with a juice bar, which has some healthy and some not so healthy options.  It’s a great place if you are motivated enough to work out on your own and stay focused, but all in all, there are too many distractions here.  I’m not saying you can’t get in shape here, it’s just a lot more difficult.

The last option is the big corporate gym.  These usually only exist in big cities, so if you aren’t in one, good for you.  These places are in business to make money, as is anyone in business, but they are doing it at your expense.  You usually pay higher rates than the “club” gym, which is super cheap, but you also get none of the amenities.  They are there to sell, sell, sell.  That’s fine for some people, but when you pay more for a gym that doesn’t fix equipment in a timely manner, a lot of times you get frustrated, and it hurts the consistency of your workouts.  The personal trainers here are adequate, and for the most part are there to help, because corporate takes a huge percentage of the personal training packages, which is a double edged sword.  On the one hand, you have people who are actually there to help.  On the other hand, you have personal trainers, who are a little inexperienced, because the more knowledgable trainer will want more money than they would get at one of these gyms.  The good thing about this gym though, is that generally the people here are here to work out, and you may, if equipment allows, get something good out of these places.

So now it’s your job to figure out, where, if any of these places you fit in.  Maybe none of these fit who you are, and you want to try P90X.  I don’t know.  Give it a shot!

Fitness Fighters. It’s a RUMBLE!

Saturday, December 11th, 2010

tclogo with dot com1 300x213 Fitness Fighters. Its a RUMBLE!I hate cardio.  Always have.  Always will probably.  I do it sometimes because I feel like my fitness isn’t complete without having a big lung capacity too.  Anyway.  When it comes to burning fat, I think you can accomplish that in a minimal amount of time, as long as you work hard.  A girl on facebook did NOT agree with me.  I would like to tell you about an “argument” I had with a certain person on facebook who will remain nameless.  She was a figure competitor, and basically said that the ONLY way you can burn fat is to do between 30-60 minutes of cardio.  I think this, in itself, is silly.  That’s like saying the only way to get from Chicago to Los Angeles is by train.  There are literally hundreds of ways to burn body fat.  I won’t go into them, and will stick with my ammo for the argument of 20 minutes of cardio.  I asked if I only did 20 minutes of cardio, would I burn any fat. She said no.  She didn’t ask how hard I was working, or if I was doing intervals or what exactly my cardio was, she just basically told me if that’s all I’m doing, I might as well go back to bed.  How does that make sense?  She also said it has to be continuous for at least 30 minutes.  None of it made sense.  Take a track and field sprinter who is all muscle.  They NEVER really do 30 minutes of continuous cardio, yet, remain at about 6-10% bodyfat.  Anyway.  I won’t go into all the details, but my point is this.  You can burn fat, in a minimal amount of time.  As long as the intensity is high, you can usually burn MORE fat than if you did moderate intensity cardio for 30 minutes.  Think about it this way.  If you jog 3 miles in 40 minutes, and I do that same 3 miles in 20 minutes, who got a better workout?  (Let’s say we are on par physically.)  I did.  And I will burn more fat, because my intensity was higher, and I was running faster.  So next time your trainer, or bodybuilding friend, or local fitness competitor says you NEED to do at least 30 minutes of cardio, remember this article.

Personal Trainer Las Vegas- Meet St. George, Utah and Their Healthy Culture

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

imag0158 300x179 Personal Trainer Las Vegas Meet St. George, Utah and Their Healthy Cultureimag0153 300x179 Personal Trainer Las Vegas Meet St. George, Utah and Their Healthy CultureYo.  Personal Trainer tonycress.com here.  I live in Las Vegas, about 2 hours from St. George, Utah.  I have lived here for over five years now, and never knew this little city was that close.  I am so happy I do now.  I went to a fitness and wellness spa, in St. George, over the weekend, and it was one of the most enjoyable times I have had since I have been in Las Vegas.  The place, called, Red Mountain Spa ,was it’s own, very tiny community about 15 minutes into the city.  Stayed in a great villa apartment, complete with a pebble strewn shower.  Meaning, the shower floor was made up of basically a bed of river rocks.  Felt like every time I moved, I was massaging my feet.

This place was just truly amazing.  I was there for two days, and basically they have a schedule set up for you, if you choose to follow it.  There are fitness classes, workouts, nutrition talks, guided hikes, and meditations throughout the day.  I chose to listen to their talk about the Red Mountain Detox Program, and went to a class about sports conditioning, where I actually met two sisters from my hometown.  Small world I tell you.  Anyway. the whole day is planned out for you, food is included, and they have TONS of healthy options.  I just feel refreshed after going to this place.  The people were amazing as well.  Everyone was so nice, and willing to help you with anything you needed.  You had use of their fitness center, spa services, and steam room too.  This would be a great mini-vacation for anyone living in Las Vegas.  Seems pricey at first, but when you factor in the activities and food included, it’s very affordable. Check it out.  I think I may go back just to refresh, and get my health back in order in a few months.

Why Are We So Fat?

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

So, I was working out with a couple of my friends last week.  One was in good shape, the other, we’ll just say “not as good of shape”.  Within a few minutes, the latter of the two, was wheezing, and then within a couple more minutes, he decided to throw up.  But guess what.  He got back up on his feet, and started working out again.  I can’t remember exactly what exercise we were doing, when he stopped, on his knees, and said, “I’m so fat.”  I thought this was one of the funniest things I’d ever heard, at the time.  It still is pretty damn funny, but it just got me thinking.  Why ARE so many of us “so fat“?  I will not take genetics as an excuse.  I know certain people are predisposed to keeping fat on, some lose it easily, and some can’t gain weight without effort, but all of that is modifiable.  I mean, you look at the tv and you can see infomercial after infomercial with 400 pound people on there who are now down to 130 pounds with the help of whatever gimmicky product they are promoting.  I’m not saying the product worked, but SOMETHING worked for these people.  I think in Las Vegas at least, this whole lifestyle is set up to make you fat.  Going out all the time, lack of quality healthy restaurants, your social status evaluated by how much alcohol you can actually drink in one night, and on and on.  I mean, for a city of 2 million people, there aren’t a ton of healthy options.  Drinking, smoking, gambling, and more drinking prevail here.  Case closed as to why my friend said what he said.  But, he has options.  He doesn’t HAVE to drink, no matter how many people say, “come on man, just one shot”.  Doesn’t matter how many people say to him, “come on man, how often am I in Vegas?”.  He can stick to his guns, and drink water, still spend time with these people, and wake up the next day and work out.  Problem is most people don’t do that.  So, if you are in that population, ask yourself WHY you don’t do that?  What about drinking makes you feel good?  How does it make you feel better than a workout?  I believe it’s because of instant gratification.  Most everything that gives you that feel good feeling right away, isn’t really good FOR you.  Our society has become this place where whatever it is, we want it now.  I definitely have fallen into that trap myself.  I do have to dig myself out from time to time, but if you see those holes coming, you will be less likely to fall in.  Most people want fitness results quickly too.  So when they see the newest TV workout craze, they jump on.  When they haven’t lost a pound in two weeks, guess what happens.  They stop, and go back to not working out.  Same thing goes with food.  I’m in this boat too.  If it takes longer than five minutes to make, most people aren’t eating it… unless someone else makes it for them.  So what happens is these fast food places, and seemingly healthy choices, which are not healthy at all, become the norm.  It’s much easier to get a smoothie filled with sugar, and a wrap that has tons of processed chemicals in it from a smoothie shop, than to make them both yourself.  You could save tons of worthless calories, not to mention chemicals that muck up your internal systems, if you just took the time to prepare.

Anyway.  I think I find myself rambling here now.  My point is, people aren’t taking responsibility for their own actions when it comes to their weight, nutrition, and physical activity.  They blame it on time, work, and other errands.  If you tell me you can’t work out for ten minutes a day, I bet you I can tell you 5 different areas in your day where you can work out for 20.  Seriously go through your day, hour by hour, and figure out what exactly you do for those 24 hours.  There will be way more free time than you think.  There will obviously be the exceptions to the rule, but for most of us, a lot of the day is wasted.  If you work in an office, why are you sitting in a chair all day?  Get up, move, buy a stability ball.  Do 10 pushups at the top of every hour.  There are ways around it, we are just too lazy as a whole to do it.  Over the years, we’ve lost discipline to technology, believe it or not.  Nothing is manual anymore, so it makes us want to move less.  So let’s realize this, and do something about it.  The question isn’t “Why Are We So Fat?”.  The question is” What Are We Going To Do About Being So Fat?”.  So… What are we going to do?

Do You Work Out Every Day?

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

I didn’t work out today.  I also didn’t work out on Sunday I think.  So out of 5 days this week, 3 have been fitness days.  I don’t know why I wonder this, but I see people in the gym all the time, for two hours at a time, and they are there every day.  I don’t work out every day, but I know a lot of people who do.  I am in better shape than most of these people who work out every day, so, what gives?  Something isn’t right here.  I thought the more you work out, the better shape you are in.  I’m here to tell you, working out every day, in my opinion, isn’t what the cool kids do.  I work out, TOPS, 4 days a week.  Over the years, I’ve learned that resting and recovery is JUST as important as the actual workouts you do.  How are you going to become more fit, if you don’t let your muscles recuperate?  Another thing.  Those people who work out more than me, I would be curious to see just exactly what they eat on any given day.  Most people, aren’t even honest with THEMSELVES about their nutrition, so I don’t expect them to be honest to me when I ask.  Maybe it’s not even honesty, maybe it’s just that they forget they had Cold Stone 4 days in a row.  I don’t know.  Anyway,  just ranting today,  hopefully I’ll have some informational substance for you all on Friday.

Fitness One Day at a Time

Monday, October 4th, 2010

Hello fitness enthusiasts, people afraid of exercise, and people in between.  I am going to make today’s post very short.  I have a mission for you, and some of you may not come out alive.  Some of you may not like it.  Some of you may hunt me down after the mission and punch me in the gut.  Well, I hope none of these are the case.  Anyway.  The mission is simply this.  Do one thing different TODAY, that is positive towards your goals.  Whether it is getting in an extra serving of vegetables, trying a totally new workout, just walking around the block for the first time, playing tag with your kids, saying no to that 2pm can of soda, cupcake, or candy bar, doing ten pushups every time your phone rings, or just STANDING when you take your phone calls, do that ONE thing, that’s different than what you normally do.  Try and make that one thing, a HABIT this week.  That’s all this post is about.  Make small changes, to make big changes, over time.

My Fitness Diet- Las Vegas Personal Trainer

Saturday, September 18th, 2010

Today, it’s cooling down in Las Vegas.  It’s days like this that I enjoy the weather, and being outside.  But enough about the weather.  That’s not what we are here to talk about.  Do you see the title of this post?  If you saw that, and are reading this, you want to know what I eat.  Well, let’s get to it.  I am going to tell you what I ate, Friday, the 17th of September, because it’s 11 am Saturday, and my fitness nutrition has barely started for the day.  Mind you, I have a photoshoot in one month, so right now I am eating to gain about two pounds in the next three weeks.  Then my diet will change a bit the last week before the shoot.  Anyway.  To the menu!

At 7am, before I started training, I had myself a fiber cake from Trader Joes, a Met-Rx protein brownie, 12 organic strawberries, and a zipfizz.  I can’t go without my zipfizz to start the day.  Some people drink Starbucks, I drink zipfizz.

Around 11 am, right before my workout for the day, I had two pieces of sprouted wheat bread, with raw, creamy unsalted almond butter, and organic blackberry preserves.  I also had a scoop of Super Pump 250.  It’s like NO-Xplode, just a different company.

Around 2 pm, I tried one of those Gatorade Protein drinks.  Not a huge fan of the taste, but I needed something quick.

At 5 pm, I had my Recovery 2:1:1 from Optimum Nutrition.  Everyone I know except myself HATES the taste of this, but I love it for some reason.

7 pm was time for me to fill it up again, so I had a sprouted wheat bagel, with a vegan chik’n pattie and organic hummus.  I had 30 purple grapes, and 20 juju fish.  I can’t get away from sweets througout the day.

I was an idiot, and didn’t eat til I got home from work at about midnight, but I went to town!  I had a spinach salad, with walnuts, and chicken breast, covered in raspberry vinagrette.  I didn’t stop there though.  Had my favorite restaurant in town, Bachi Burger, where I got this sandwich called the Lonely Bird.  it’s a mix of chicken breast and turkey breast, with tomato and greens.

Throughout the day, I had about 3 liters of water, which is kind of low for me.  But all in all, that’s about 3600 calories,  225 grams of protein, 80 grams of fat, and 485 grams of carbs.  To say my diet is low carb, would be maybe the funniest thing since “Anchorman”.  This works for me.  It may not work for the next person, but i’ve experimented enough, knowing the breakdowns my body needs to look it’s best.  In a few weeks, I’ll give you a day of the “cutting” diet.  Now, I don’t eat this every day, because that would get boring, but this is just a sample of what i go through.  How many calories do YOU get a day?
