Assess Your Fitness and Health- Las Vegas Personal Trainer

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

How do you assess your fitness and health?  Do you work out with a personal trainer?  Do you know if you move properly?  Can you get out of bed without groaning because of the pain in your back?  Do you think you look good naked?  Are you out of breath when you go up a flight of stairs.  Does just thinking about running on a treadmill give you a heart attack?  Are you happy with your job?  Do you have lots of friends or even just a few that make you happy?  I could go on and on.  It’s not only about how you look.  Fitness isn’t just muscles and vanity.  It’s about how you perform, how you move, and how long you can move for.  Health isn’t just about you not having the flu or diabetes.  Health is about being happy, being alive and being vibrant.  Your job takes up a lot of your life.  If you aren’t truly happy with it, are you really doing something healthy for you?  Take a look at all areas of your life, and ask yourself these questions.  It’s time you assess your fitness and health, and make the necessary adjustments to make sure you are at the top of your game in each area.

Why Are We So Fat?

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

So, I was working out with a couple of my friends last week.  One was in good shape, the other, we’ll just say “not as good of shape”.  Within a few minutes, the latter of the two, was wheezing, and then within a couple more minutes, he decided to throw up.  But guess what.  He got back up on his feet, and started working out again.  I can’t remember exactly what exercise we were doing, when he stopped, on his knees, and said, “I’m so fat.”  I thought this was one of the funniest things I’d ever heard, at the time.  It still is pretty damn funny, but it just got me thinking.  Why ARE so many of us “so fat“?  I will not take genetics as an excuse.  I know certain people are predisposed to keeping fat on, some lose it easily, and some can’t gain weight without effort, but all of that is modifiable.  I mean, you look at the tv and you can see infomercial after infomercial with 400 pound people on there who are now down to 130 pounds with the help of whatever gimmicky product they are promoting.  I’m not saying the product worked, but SOMETHING worked for these people.  I think in Las Vegas at least, this whole lifestyle is set up to make you fat.  Going out all the time, lack of quality healthy restaurants, your social status evaluated by how much alcohol you can actually drink in one night, and on and on.  I mean, for a city of 2 million people, there aren’t a ton of healthy options.  Drinking, smoking, gambling, and more drinking prevail here.  Case closed as to why my friend said what he said.  But, he has options.  He doesn’t HAVE to drink, no matter how many people say, “come on man, just one shot”.  Doesn’t matter how many people say to him, “come on man, how often am I in Vegas?”.  He can stick to his guns, and drink water, still spend time with these people, and wake up the next day and work out.  Problem is most people don’t do that.  So, if you are in that population, ask yourself WHY you don’t do that?  What about drinking makes you feel good?  How does it make you feel better than a workout?  I believe it’s because of instant gratification.  Most everything that gives you that feel good feeling right away, isn’t really good FOR you.  Our society has become this place where whatever it is, we want it now.  I definitely have fallen into that trap myself.  I do have to dig myself out from time to time, but if you see those holes coming, you will be less likely to fall in.  Most people want fitness results quickly too.  So when they see the newest TV workout craze, they jump on.  When they haven’t lost a pound in two weeks, guess what happens.  They stop, and go back to not working out.  Same thing goes with food.  I’m in this boat too.  If it takes longer than five minutes to make, most people aren’t eating it… unless someone else makes it for them.  So what happens is these fast food places, and seemingly healthy choices, which are not healthy at all, become the norm.  It’s much easier to get a smoothie filled with sugar, and a wrap that has tons of processed chemicals in it from a smoothie shop, than to make them both yourself.  You could save tons of worthless calories, not to mention chemicals that muck up your internal systems, if you just took the time to prepare.

Anyway.  I think I find myself rambling here now.  My point is, people aren’t taking responsibility for their own actions when it comes to their weight, nutrition, and physical activity.  They blame it on time, work, and other errands.  If you tell me you can’t work out for ten minutes a day, I bet you I can tell you 5 different areas in your day where you can work out for 20.  Seriously go through your day, hour by hour, and figure out what exactly you do for those 24 hours.  There will be way more free time than you think.  There will obviously be the exceptions to the rule, but for most of us, a lot of the day is wasted.  If you work in an office, why are you sitting in a chair all day?  Get up, move, buy a stability ball.  Do 10 pushups at the top of every hour.  There are ways around it, we are just too lazy as a whole to do it.  Over the years, we’ve lost discipline to technology, believe it or not.  Nothing is manual anymore, so it makes us want to move less.  So let’s realize this, and do something about it.  The question isn’t “Why Are We So Fat?”.  The question is” What Are We Going To Do About Being So Fat?”.  So… What are we going to do?

I Can’t Cook… So THIS Is My Solution

Sunday, November 14th, 2010

I can’t cook.  Seriously.  But i do figure out ways to eat healthy with my un Rachel Ray like skills.  I can get by on a lot of lemon pepper on my chicken and rice, and some chili sauce on my brown rice or quinoa.  Sometimes I’ll even bake sweet potato fries (precut of course).  I will never be the casserole king.  I possibly, even if time allows, will never write a recipe book.  You will never see me on the food channel showing you how to make pretty chocolate desserts in under an hour that taste amazing, and look like boquets of flowers.  I’ll tell you this.  I have honestly no idea how to make healthy food taste like it’s unhealthy.  If I did, I’d be pretty rich.  But this blog today isn’t about cooking.  It’s about the opposite.  I’ve been watching a lot of food documentaries late at night before I go to bed.  Some talking about food curing cancer, some talking about how the pharmaceutical and chemical companies basically run the food industries.  Stuff that most people don’t care about.  But it got me thinking.  None of us REALLY know what is put in the food we eat.  Especially things that aren’t just one ingredient.  We all know an apple is an apple.  But what exactly is a microwave dinner.  What’s in that?  have you ever read the ingredient list?  It’ll say sweet and sour chicken, but there will literally be 75 ingredients.  What are those ingredients doing to your body?  I have decided to do an experiment with myself.  Crazy I know.  But I like being a scientist.  So in order to know exactly what I am putting in my body, I am deciding to eat only raw, organic foods for the next month.  This should be interesting.  I may or may not modify this.  If I lose ten pounds in the first week, I’ll be adding chicken to the plan.  This is going to be extremely interesting since I rely on zipfizz a lot.  So no whey protein shakes, no cooked foods, no zipfizz.  I’m going to try to journal each week and see how I feel and let you know the effects of it all, so this should be interesting.  Your beloved Rachel Ray would probably not approve of this mostly fruits and veggies plan, but I don’t care.  If you are interested in becoming weird like me, there are a few documentaries you should watch.  Food Matters is probably the most influental out of all the ones I have watched.  Food Inc. is a must see.  The Beautiful Truth is a great documentary about food being the cure for cancer, and The Gerson Miracle is another good one.  I’ll be updating soon.  Wish me luck.

What Sport Has The Fittest Athletes?

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

Don’t know why i just thought of this question.  NBA summer league is up on tv, and there are some guys with some muscle on those courts!  Playing basketball, I can appreciate the athleticism some of these guys have.  And some of them are just chiseled.  I also saw the other night on VH1 I think it was, the T.O. Show.  Or something like that.  Terrell Owens is trying to find a wife or something.  Pointless really, but they do have a little clip of him working out.  That dude is jacked.  And he plays basketball in his free time as well.  The reason I am writing this, is because I am wondering, which sport has the athletes who possess the most fitness?  Is it football, with their fast receivers, powerful lineman, and agile running backs?  Is it basketball, with their ultra quick point guards, their lean, long athletic forwards, and centers with their footwork?  Maybe it’s baseball, with their… umm….their…. pitchers, and tobacco, and stuff.  Wait, NO!  definitely not baseball. There are some healthy, fit guys, but for the most part, come on.  Hockey?  possibly. I don’t know a ton about hockey, but i know these guys are skating non stop for a couple hours.  So I ask you guys?  What sport do you think has the overall fittest athletes?  I know a lot of people are going to say rugby, or soccer.  Give me your argument, and why.
