Results in 5 days? Las Vegas Personal Trainer

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Let’s say you have a photo shoot in Las Vegas in 5 days.  But, you don’t think you are photo shoot ready.  What are some of the things you can do?  You can starve yourself, which usually isn’t very painless.  You can take water pills, which also isn’t healthy.  And you could do sauna, garbage bag suit thing, and cardio for 5 hours a day.  None of which sounds fun.  I have a simple solution, which in itself, plays with your emotions, and your discipline, but works.  It literally is ONE change, that can visibly affect your body in as little as 5 days.  Here it is.

Every time you eat, have a source of protein, and a vegetable.  Most of us humans don’t do this.  So let’s say everyone knows the chicken and broccoli, but what about Tuna and asparagus?  Or Salmon and green beans?  How about turkey breast and spinach.  You could even do this with supplements.  Whey protein shake and carrots.  Even a recovery shake and celery.  I’m not saying to not have other sources of food, but keep them minimal.  If a 5 day fix is what you really want, which in my opinion, shouldn’t have to happen in the first place, this is how you do it without killing yourself.  don’t do the dumb cleanses, or not eating, or water pills.  Be smart about it.

On a side note, I would like to say thank you to Jessica Otero, from Infinite Labs, for hooking me up with some of their product.  I’m excited to try out this Juggernaut stuff!

You Can Look Like THIS- Las Vegas Personal Training

Monday, May 16th, 2011

Do you have a personal trainer?  If not, Las Vegas has some great ones.  Look into it.  But seriously guys, the reason I am writing this post, is to debunk a myth or two today.  I hear a lot of people saying this or that is the reason they can’t work out, or get in shape, and they can’t look like this, or this.  (thanks Ryan Reynolds and Jessica Biel)  The question I pose, is, why not?  How do you think they got there?  Because they are famous?  Probably not.  There are PLENTY of famous people who aren’t in shape at all.  So that’s not it.  We’ve talked before about having the time, money, equipment at home, knowledge, and on and on and on, about the pitfalls to not being in the best shape you can be in.  But the only thing holding you back, is you!  You make the effort.  Jessica Biel doesn’t have someone work out for her, she works out herself.  She actually takes the time out of her day, which I am sure involves some sort of acting, to get her workouts in.  Same with Ryan Reynolds.  I know they have more money than most of us, but what does that matter?  Do you need money to work out?  Or to take your kids to the park?  NO.  You just need effort from yourself, and the will to become great!  We all have it, it’s just where will you find it in you?  There is no stopping you from getting your best body.  You are only stopping yourself.  Take those limitations off, and start to move.  If you are already working out, and not seeing the gains you would have hoped, assess your situation, and figure out the solutions to getting there!  There is NO REASON any of us should feel bad about our bodies.  Take the right steps, and you will lose that feeling, and gain a wonderful one.

Eating Healthy Is Too Expensive? – Las Vegas Personal Trainer Weighs In

Friday, May 6th, 2011

I get a statement from a lot of people when it comes to eating healthy.  They say it’s too expensive.  Trips to Las Vegas are expensive.  I see people end up spending over a thousand dollars a trip without the bat of an eyelid.  It’s all about what you value, but let’s not totally get into that.  Being a personal trainer, sure, I’m a little biased, but I just don’t get how you can say eating healthy, nutritious food is too expensive!  Let’s take my week for example.  I’m going to give you three meals I had.  Unfortunately, they were all dine out meals, which, most of us do weekly, to be honest.  I went to Sunrise Cafe on Sunday.  What did I have?  A Power Wrap and grapefruit juice, and a side of french toast. Yup.  I said it:)  Cost- $15.  I also went to Bachi Burger and had a Lonely Bird Chicken and Turkey Sandwich, and an iced green tea.  Cost-$12.  Then i went to Thai House, and had some red chicken curry.  Cost- $15.  Ok.  That’s three meals, for a total of $42.  This is NOT uncommon for the average person, who complains that eating healthy is too expensive.  Let’s see what that $42 can buy us in healthy food.  You can get boneless, skinless chicken breast for $3.00 a pound some places.  So, let’s get 2 pounds.  You can get 16 ounce packages of frozen, ORGANIC broccoli for $2.00.  Let’s get 3 packs.  Fuji Apples- $2.00 a pound, let’s get 3 pounds.  Brown Rice, a bag that makes 10 servings- $3.00.  Bell Peppers average about 79 cents each.  I’ll take 5.

So in total we have:

  1. 2 lbs. of chicken breast- about 8 servings
  2. 3 bags of broccoli- about 10 servings
  3. 3 pounds of apples- about 8 apples
  4. 10 servings of brown rice
  5. 5 bell peppers- about 10 servings

We just spent $25.  So, instead of those 3 meals for $42, we now have about 8-9 meals for $25.  So, 3 times as many meals, for we’ll say, half the cost.  Most people just don’t want to cook, is the reason I think that they give for healthy food being too expensive.  It’s not too expensive at all, as we all can see.  It’s about convenience, and being lazy.  That’s really what it’s all about.  It’s a matter of quitting with the excuses, and just making the decision to eat better, plan your meals and having the drive to reach your goal.

The other “cheap”  option is fast food.  Let’s break that down.  Let’s say you eat a value meal every day.  We’ll round that to about $5.00 a meal.  Even at that low price, you still can’t beat the average of $3.00 a meal on the healthy side.  I don’t want to get into this any further, because, if you just look at price, you lost your argument.

If you are looking at time, as far as a convenience factor.  If you take 2 hours a week, to prepare your meals, that argument is gone now as well.

I would love for any of you to email me a great argument to NOT eat healthy.  The taste thing, you can grow out of.  For example, I GREW to love chicken.  I didn’t love it at first.  Same thing with almond butter.  Hated it when I first tasted it, but now I prefer it over peanut butter.  Bring it on.  you can email me at tony@tonycress.com

Las Vegas Personal Training- The Only Thing In The Way Of You In Shape

Monday, April 4th, 2011

Good LORD is it beautiful in Las Vegas right now!  It’s about 75 degrees and sunny. Can’t ask for much more than that.  Well, A hot tub at my house would be nice, so I guess you can, but I’ll take it.  I have a break from my personal training clients right now, so I thought I’d write a short post about obstacles to overcome in the journey of health and fitness.  One obstacle in particular.  This one, you can probably apply to many other aspects of life as well.  Think of all the things that can get in the way of you not being in the best shape possible.  Time, money, no good food choices, kids, work, your peers, your family, your girlfriend or boyfriend, your dog.  The list goes on and on.  Maybe it’s you.  Not any of these other things.  People tend to take the easy way out on these things, regardless of what it is.  It takes discipline to go get a great body.  That’s not a lie.  But it’s easy to use excuses like time, which is my all time favorite excuse, because everyone has the same amount of hours in the day, as the reason for their shortcomings in whatever goal they are trying to aspire to.  This may come off harsh, but maybe it’s you, who spent the last 20 minutes surfing the internet, stuck on facebook, when you could have gotten one of the best workouts of your life in.  Maybe it’s you who could have been focusing on being productive, instead of arguing on how much time you don’t have to be productive.  Don’t blame your dog.  Don’t blame your kids.  There are plenty of people who work two jobs, have three kids, and STILL find time to get a 20-40 minute workout in 3-4 times a week.  If you are trying to reach your goals, they aren’t going to come with an easy way out.

Las Vegas Personal Training- Happy Hour? Not So Fast.

Monday, March 21st, 2011

We all work.  Well, most of us anyway.  When 5 pm hits, or here in Las Vegas, 4 am for some of you, the first thing you want to do is hang out, and have a drink.  You work out, and you eat clean, so what’s one or two drinks matter?  To be honest, that depends.  What drinks are your one or two drinks?  How much do you eat during the day?  What do you do for your work out?  What’s your zodiac sign?  Kidding on the last one, unless astrologists know something I don’t.  But let’s break it down for the average woman trying to lose weight

Let’s say you are trying to lose weight, so you have lowered your calories to somewhere around 1600-1800 calories a day.  If you are working out and exercising regularly, you shouldn’t be going much lower than this, but that’s another story.  Ok.  You decide to hit up the Applebees happy hour around the corner, or Drai’s after hours here in Las Vegas.  You are only going to have a couple drinks.  Let’s say that “couple” turns in to 4.  Ok  now here’s where we start.  What drinks are you having.  Applebees has drinks that can contain over 600 calories.  That’s one drink.  Say you have 2.  So, you are restricting your calories to 1800.  You have two drinks at 600 calories each, so your total calorie count is 1200 just for the drinks.  So already, two thirds of your calories for the day hold no nutritional value to you.  How to you expect to lose weight in a healthy matter, when the majority of what you put in your body is not healthy?  Most people will say they stick to rum and diet or vodka and sugar free red bull.  Ok.  Let’s say you have 4 of these.  We are still sitting at about 320 calories out of your 1800, which is actually probably higher, because most bartenders are more than generous, and you get more than a single shot serving in your drink.   Not nearly as bad, but when we are trying to lose body fat, empty calories are as bad as no calories at all.  Just take this into account the next time you decide to hit up your neighborhood Happy Hour.  You can unwind, hanging out, and drinking Fiji instead.

Do NOT Do These Exercises!

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

Everyone I know knows basic workout exercises.  The phrase, “How much do you bench?” is known universally.  People pretend to do bicep curls with beer cans doing their “12 ounce curls”.  So most people when they work out, do the stuff they know.  Pull ups, push ups, squats, bench press, curls and all that.  What if I told you that I thought some of those same exercises are ones that I would suggest to NOT do?  Obviously some of these exercises are great strength builders, work and activate the muscles intended, and show visible results.  The problem with some, is that you may be looking at this the wrong way.  I’m going to give you a list of exercises I would say you should really dissect to see if that should be in your chosen few.

1. Squats  Everyone do this one test.  Take your shoes off, and stand feet shoulder width apart.  Now raise your arms overhead in line with your ears.  Now go down into a squat.  Take a look at your mechanics.  Do your knees cave in as you descend?  Do your heels come up off the ground?  Do your arms fall forward as you squat?  Do your hips shift unevenly?  Maybe your feet turn out.  If any of these things happen to you, there are some movement compensations taking place.  (just so you know, that link is a 20 page chapter, so be ready for some reading.)  And if you keep doing the squat, especially with a bar and weights on your back, you basically are telling these faulty movement patterns to keep getting worse.  Eventually, you’ll end up with something like knee pain, lower back pain, or maybe a chronic condition.  You should look up corrective exercises for each faulty movement pattern, try to fix these, assess your situation, and THEN start moving into that squat, once those patterns have been remedied.

2. Bicep Curls  Now, there aren’t really anything wrong with these, except maybe that if you have shoulder pain, they may increase it.  My problem with bicep curls, is that they are kind of a waste of time.  You could be doing 500 other exercises that are more time efficient, that will also help your biceps look great for the beach.  Or maybe try to combine the curl with something more worthwhile.  Maybe try a squat, curl, twist and press. (providing you can efficiently and effectively do the squat.  If not, change the squat to a step up on a bench.)

3.  Crunches  Before you say you need them to get a six pack, do this test.  Stand up and put your right arm overhead and your left hand on your abs.  Now, arch back and feel your abs.  You’ll notice that they are tight, and working.  But wait!  I thought you had to CONTRACT your abs to make them work?  Your abs work in both directions, and if you are anything like the general public, you already spend 8 hours a day or more, with your abs crunched, while sitting.   Let’s work the opposite way.  Do an ab rollout with that old school wheel.  Or a plank, with your abs tight and butt flexed.  You will get more abdominal activation than those crunches anyway.

I’m not saying this is the Golden Rule for exercising, but these are things you should look at when you develop your exercise routine.  For more corrective exercises and plans, check out our website, tonycress.com .

Las Vegas Personal Trainer- Quick Weight Loss Fix?

Monday, March 7th, 2011

Las Vegas is a fast city, let’s be honest.  With all these casinos, nightclubs and attractions, it has to be.  Being a personal trainer here is no different.  “How fast can you get me in shape?  How quick can I lose ten pounds?  When will I start seeing results?”  All these are questions people ask me.  I’d like to ask all of them the following questions.  “How quick did you put on the weight you are trying to lose in 2 weeks?  How hard are you willing to work?  What, if anything are you going to change in your nutrition?”  So many people ask me about this diet pill, or that supplement.  This cleanse or that one?  Which works?  I already answered the question with a few of my own.  What are YOU willing to do, with your habits?  I don’t think a pill is going to make you lose 20 pounds.  That pill might make you think you are losing weight, or getting fit, but it’s usally the other things you do.  Take HCG for example.  You take these injections or drops, and supposedly you lose all this weight.  That’s all well and good, but here’s where the weight loss occurs.  You eat about 500 calories a day.  That’s well below the 2000 calorie RDA we have for the general population.  I myself eat about 3500-3800 calories every day.  Yeah, I’d probably lose weight.  I’m going to end with this.  If you have gained weight over time, it’s probably best you lose that weight over time as well.  The quick fixes aren’t pills or cleanses, they are working out, and proper nutrition.  Try those for a while, see what happens.

Las Vegas Personal Trainer- “Pilates is NOT for Women!”

Friday, February 25th, 2011

I do  pilates at one of Las Vegas’ most respected physical therapy clinics.  Well, it’s one of the most respected clinics in the nation, but that’s besides the point.  I do pilates.  That’s the point.  And the only reason I started doing it, was because Tiger Woods’ physical therapist is telling me to.  Despite what you think of Tiger Woods and his character, his athletic ability is unreal, and his income is just as unreal, so I’m thinking his physical therapist, is probably unreal too.  The reason I am going to physical therapy is because I have a bum shoulder.  Yeah, I know.  I’m a personal trainer who is injured.  Deal with it.  Let’s get on with the title of this blog.  So, I am doing pilates to reintroduce my lower and middle trap to muscle activation.  As of right now, they aren’t doing their jobs, which contributes to my shoulder pain.  So what they are having me do, is reintroduce my whole body, to working as a unit.  I think I’m in pretty good shape.  In the first five minutes of my first session, my forehead was sweating.  It’s hard to explain what they had me do, but I was basically standing with my back on a pole, with two handles with springs on them in my hands.  I had to breathe out as I “pushed” the handles down to my sides, with my abs.  This, for me, was mentally challenging as well as physically, because the springs weren’t nearly enough resistance for how strong I was.  But when you have to think about each muscle contracting, and not your compensatory muscles moving the object, everything changes.  Then I had to do it on one leg.  I know I am rehabbing my shoulder, but my legs, and abs, were burning.  I finished about 35 minutes of this the first day, and was sore in all the right places the next few.  Pilates gets a rep of being for women, and developing long, lean muscles.  I suppose that’s true, if that’s what you already have.  It does help with flexibility, but it corrects your posture, and makes you actually use muscles you should be using already.  I thought i had strong abs, until I had to do the “chest lift”.  I realized, for a moment, mine are show and no go.  That’s a joke, but the chest lift is one of the hardest ab exercises I’ve ever done.  It’s basically a crunch, but you do it vertebrae by vertabrae, and a breathing technique is involved.  I was trying to find a video for you, but I can’t find a good one on youtube.

Anyway, I will say this.  Even if I cure my shoulder pain/problem, I will probably keep pilates in my arsenal of workouts.  It teaches you to be aware of your body, how it is aligned, and if you are working your muscle in the right accordance.  I think I may get certified in this art.  That’s saying a lot.  So, check it out.  I wouldn’t do classes.  I would find a private, one on one instructor.  The classes are usually generalized and pilates wasn’t designed for the masses.  I think if you are a guy, pilates is actually a must.  You think you are strong, until you get a session or two of this.  Then you realize how much work you have to do.  To check out the place I go to for this, click here.

Las Vegas Personal Trainer- Motivation Daily Dose

Friday, February 11th, 2011

Get up!  Right now!  Do 20 jumping jacks.  I’m a personal trainer in Las Vegas.  This is my job to yell at you!  Not really, but I think sometimes people need a little kick in the nuts.  I mean, butt.  Nuts would be funnier, but the butt gets ya going.  It’s time to get in shape.  I hear so often, I mean SO OFTEN, people tell me, “Yeah, I need to get back in shape.  I should call you.”  Well, call me then.  I think that most of the reasons people aren’t in shape, aren’t because they don’t have time, or they are too busy, or they have health problems, or they have bad genes.  The reason most people aren’t in shape is because they aren’t taking accountability for what they do.  Enough people don’t get up off their asses and DO SOMETHING.  It’s not about time.  Everyone has the same amount of time in the day.  Some people choose to work out, and some people don’t.  Whether or not you have things to do in the day, is irrelevant.  I have things to do in the day, and so does the president.  Both of us seem to find time to work out.  It’s not about how many kids you have.  I know a woman with six kids, a regular job, AND a six pack.  Tell me how that works.  It’s also not about your genes.  I know multiple people with a family history of obesity, yet they are a picture of health.  It’s about YOU, and what you do.  It’s about where you choose to use your time.  Are you going to watch the latest episode of Jersey Shore, or are you going to watch the latest episode of Jersey Shore while doing your cardio?  Are you not working out and attaining your goals because you don’t know how?  Then get help.  You don’t have to get a personal trainer.  Look online.  It’s not the best way to go, but information is ALL OVER the place.  If you have no idea where to start, just google, “how to work out“.  There’s your start.  Now. Get up!

Working Out In The Air? Las Vegas Personal Trainer Explains

TRX Camp!

I am back in Las Vegas from San Diego.  That was a great trip.  I was there to go through a certification course on sports medicine on the TRX Suspension Trainer.  I went for a few days to learn about corrective exercise on the TRX.  If you have an injury, chronic pain, or reconstructive surgery, we learned about what we can do for you.  The great thing about the TRX is that you can virtually take ANYONE, and give them a total body workout.  Doesn’t matter if they are new to fitness, personal training, and working out, or if they are in fact a personal trainer themselves.  People from grandmothers, to NBA athletes, and MMA fighters can use the TRX, for a challenging workout at their own fitness level.  The seminar I attended took a bunch of different cases, and educated us on how to use the TRX to design a workout for each individual.  You can take someone with degenerative disc disease, and design a complete rebuilding program for them.  You could take an athlete, with a ligament tear, and bring them back to health, better and stronger than before.  I get excited when I talk about this device, because there are so many options while using it.  You can do plyometrics on the TRX, you can KILL your abs, and you can gain flexibility, all in the same workout.  I don’t normally hawk products, but this is one, I think everyone should own.  It’s very portable.  I take it everywhere with me.  You can use it anywhere in your house where there is a door.  I have used it in a hotel, and I’ll post a video for you guys next time.  If you go to the website, you’ll take a look at the $190 price tag and think that’s pricey, but when you think about it, this is REALLY the only piece of equipment you will ever need.  No.  I don’t own stock in it, but I do find the value of this wonderful piece of equipment. You can check out the videos on youtube, or their website at Fitness Anywhere.  I myself, train certain people solely on the TRX, and I also run a TRX Camp on Sundays in Las Vegas, which is my favorite workout.  If you have the chance, check out a class, or see if you can get your own customized workout!
