New Years Resolution Tip- Las Vegas Personal Trainer

Saturday, December 31st, 2011

I’ve got a new years resolution tip for you. We all, I’m sure, are going to be making some sort of resolution to lose weight, or finally start working out, or join that gym, or just get shredded. maybe you are trying to get a six pack for the summer this time around. Whatever the case may be, take a few things into consideration. First, if you are trying to lose weight, realize how long it took you to gain the weight you are trying to lose. It wasn’t that you gained that 30 pounds in a month. You probably gained it in the past year or so. Don’t try and lose it all in January. If you are trying to build some muscle on your frame, realize that for most people, gaining 5 pounds of muscle in a year is great progress. If you end up at the end of January, with just slightly more abs, consider it a success so far. My point is this. It’s great to have all kinds of goals for the new year, but don’t go balls to the wall. Generally, when that happens, you fizzle out. Think about running for example. Pretend you are at a full on sprint, as fast as you can go. Do you think you can run a mile at that same pace? Don’t sprint all of January just to collapse the rest of the year. If you must sprint, do it for a few seconds, take a breather, and then do it again. Happy New Year everyone!

Build Muscle, Burn Fat- Las Vegas Personal Trainer

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

You need to build muscle.  You also need to burn fat.  Wouldn’t it just be awesome, if doing one, would help the other?  Well, luckily for you, it does.  85985 Fat Man Lifting A Barbell Poster Art Print 300x217 Build Muscle, Burn Fat Las Vegas Personal TrainerYour personal trainer is here, at your service, to tell you, it’s not as difficult as you think.  Let’s just make todays blog post very simple.  I have a few clients who wear those monitors showing you how many calories you burn throughout the day.  I also own one.  If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you can check out the one that I own, here.  Well, let’s say these things are accurate.  Right now, it says that I burn on average 3200 calories a day, at rest.  Because I’m active, have a low body fat percentage, and weigh 190 pounds, I can eat 3200 calories each day, and not change a thing.  One of my clients, who, let’s say weighs 150, burns about 1700 calories at rest, but has a higher body fat percentage than me.  So I burn almost twice as many calories, but don’t weigh twice as much.  I have a much lower body fat percentage, so I in turn, have more muscle.  I won’t gain fat nearly as easily, because I have a higher ceiling for the amount of calories I can consume.  So wouldn’t it make sense, if you don’t want to gain excess fat, to build muscle?  Just based on these numbers alone, you would want to build a couple of pounds of muscle, regardless of your weight.  Let’s be honest.  In Las Vegas especially, but throughout the nation, we have become a society of over-eaters.  So if you go past your allotted calories for the day, where do you think that excess is going to end up?  Not in a six pack, but in a keg.  It will result ultimately, in you storing body fat.  So whether you are 150 pounds, 300 pounds, or 90, it would make sense to put a little muscle on your frame, if, only for that extra calorie cushion.  And look at it this way too.  If you build muscle, and don’t eat more than your daily needs, what do you think is going to happen?  You will burn fat, because, your body needs extra calories now for energy, and the first thing your body will look at, is stored body fat.  So, it’s a plus two!  Build muscle, burn fat, and if you want, you can eat just a little more!

The Difference Between Being in Shape, and Looking Like You Are- Las Vegas Personal Training

Monday, July 18th, 2011

I live in Las Vegas.  I see tons of people with GREAT bodies, and tons of people with, let’s just say, not so great bodies.  Let’s just take the people with great bodies for this post.  OK.  I know a lot of people in the show industry here in Las Vegas, from male dancers, to female dancers to Cirque Du Soleil performers to little people who ride tricycles.  A lot of them LOOK like they are in great shape, and to credit a few, some of them ARE.  But a lot of it is also an illusion.  I run a fitness camp through my personal training stuff, and If you took any random group of some of these performers who look to be in killer shape, I will bet you around half, would think this is the hardest workout of their lives.  I will say this.  Fitness Camp is challenging, but it is nowhere near the hardest workout of your life.  The problem is, a lot of these “in shape” people, and performers, are in shape for their particular talent.  If you rounded up the guys in Chippendales, Thunder from Down Under, and American Storm, three male revues containing guys with great bodies, I would venture to guess that 25 % would function well in fitness camp.  How can this be?  Well, some people work out to LOOK good, and some people work out to BE good.  If you do the former, you are a one trick pony.  If you do the latter, it will serve you two purposes.  You’ll actually be in shape, and as a result, you will look good as well.  So when it comes time to hike those trails at Red Rock,  you’ll have enough energy to take some pictures, AND want to take your shirt off for those pictures.  Have a good day.

Where Are My Abs? Las Vegas Personal Training

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

I have abs.  You have abs.  That 400 pound dude eating the cheetos, trough of ice cream, and keg of lemonade has abs too.  If you compare us all, side to side, you’ll see mine, you may see yours, and the 400 pound man, well, you’ll have to feel around, get a magnifying glass, and give him an ultrasound to see if there are any there.  But he does have them.  What’s the difference?  Body fat.  It isn’t who has more muscle when it comes to having a six pack.  That plays a part, we all know that, but I will also say there are tons of crack heads who have a six pack too, and it has nothing to do with their nutrition program.  the less bodyfat you have, the more your abs will show.  I don’t recommend becoming addicted to any drugs, but I do recommend losing bodyfat.  And the best way to do that, IS to monitor your nutrition program.  If you are eating based on whatever is cheapest, then you probably won’t see your abs any time soon.  I know money plays a role in all our lives, but you need good quality FOOD to really make a difference.  Just because this oatmeal is 20 cents, doesn’t make it a better fit than the oatmeal that is $2.00, if the quality of the oatmeal diminishes just as much as the price does.  Like I always say with most things, you pay for what you get.  Just because macaroni and cheese is a dollar a box, does not make it a good substitute for lean ground beef, a sweet potato, and some steamed greens.  If you think that way, you’ll never see your abs.  It takes dedication, planning, and some willpower to get those abs to show.  Learn a little bit about the food you eat, and the effects that that food will have on you, and you’ll realize why, macaroni and cheese does not equal a six pack.

Las Vegas Personal Trainer- Motivation Daily Dose

Friday, February 11th, 2011

Get up!  Right now!  Do 20 jumping jacks.  I’m a personal trainer in Las Vegas.  This is my job to yell at you!  Not really, but I think sometimes people need a little kick in the nuts.  I mean, butt.  Nuts would be funnier, but the butt gets ya going.  It’s time to get in shape.  I hear so often, I mean SO OFTEN, people tell me, “Yeah, I need to get back in shape.  I should call you.”  Well, call me then.  I think that most of the reasons people aren’t in shape, aren’t because they don’t have time, or they are too busy, or they have health problems, or they have bad genes.  The reason most people aren’t in shape is because they aren’t taking accountability for what they do.  Enough people don’t get up off their asses and DO SOMETHING.  It’s not about time.  Everyone has the same amount of time in the day.  Some people choose to work out, and some people don’t.  Whether or not you have things to do in the day, is irrelevant.  I have things to do in the day, and so does the president.  Both of us seem to find time to work out.  It’s not about how many kids you have.  I know a woman with six kids, a regular job, AND a six pack.  Tell me how that works.  It’s also not about your genes.  I know multiple people with a family history of obesity, yet they are a picture of health.  It’s about YOU, and what you do.  It’s about where you choose to use your time.  Are you going to watch the latest episode of Jersey Shore, or are you going to watch the latest episode of Jersey Shore while doing your cardio?  Are you not working out and attaining your goals because you don’t know how?  Then get help.  You don’t have to get a personal trainer.  Look online.  It’s not the best way to go, but information is ALL OVER the place.  If you have no idea where to start, just google, “how to work out“.  There’s your start.  Now. Get up!

How To Get Your Six Pack Abs Without Crunches

Sunday, January 23rd, 2011

We all hate crunches.  I don’t know anyone I’ve talked to, in a journey for their own six pack, who says they love to do them.  This blog is going to tell you how to get your six pack, without doing any.  Say it ain’t so!  Yes, it is. I haven’t done crunches or any “ab exercises” for a couple years now, and I think mine are doing alright.  you can check them out here.  This is a pretty meticulous plan, but it’s one that works. If you want to show off your six pack this summer at the pool here in Las Vegas, the beach in Cali, or maybe even your backyard in Iowa, you might want to read on.  We are going to give you the key points to pay attention to, in order to get killer abs.

The first thing you need to do is work out.  I know.  It seems pretty simple and evident, but I know so many people who think that if they lose weight, they should have abs.  You need to build some muscle, to help burn the fat that is surrounding that precious six pack.  This is number one on my list.  There are a few people I know, that do have a six pack, without really working out, but we are speaking to you, who doesn’t have one, who wants one.  So join a gym, start doing P90X, get with a personal trainer, whatever. You need to become active, to start seeing some results.

Next, don’t listen to the television.  Media, and marketing have decided to let you know that it takes two seconds to get abs.  This is a big fat lie.  There are tons of products that you’ll see on television that promise fitness model midsections in 5 minutes a day.  What most people don’t realize is somewhere in those commercials, there are disclamers that are written in very small type, saying that this product, will get you abs…. IN ADDITION to having a strict nutrition plan and regular workout routines.  Basically, what they are telling you is that you could probably get great abs WITHOUT that device, machine, or program they are advertising.

Do not neglect the rest of your body.  As a personal trainer, I think one of the questions I get asked the most is about problem areas.  Usually the tummy is one of those problem areas.  That’s great and all, but you have to realize that just because your stomach holds fat, and you can tell, doesn’t mean there isn’t fat on the rest of your body.  I think for the most part, most people realize you can’t spot reduce, but there is still some of that belief out there.  I will put this simply.  If you lose fat, you won’t just lose it in your abs.  You will lose fat throughout your body.  Work out your entire body, and that will enhance fat burning all around, including your abs.  Just because you do crunches, and you are 30 pounds overweight, will not get you a six pack.  At that point, your belly isn’t your only issue.  Lose the fat, and it will come.  Incorporate total body workouts to build muscle everywhere, which will help burn that fat.

Another way get abs without crunches is to up your workout intensity.  People think that their long, steady state cardio is the only way to burn fat.  Well, I’m here to tell you, not only is that extremely boring, but it’s not even the most efficient way to burn fat.  Try out interval training.  This is a form of cardio, if done right, can last as little as ten minutes.  Basically you switch from sprinting to rest/walking, back and forth.  This can burn much more fat than your average 30 minutes on the elliptical or treadmill.  Think about it like this.  Look at your marathon runners.  What do they look like?  Now take a sprinter.  Which one would you rather look like?  The sprinter (intervals) has more muscle tone.  The marathoner (long, steady cardio) is very slender without much muscle tone.  If you want to see your abs, which one do you think you should train like?

Do ab work that isn’t “ab work”.  People think six pack, they think crunches, sit ups, and ab devices.  If you do exercises that incorporate your core throughout your workout, you won’t even have to worry about hitting your abs at the end of the workout.  Try exercises like mountain climbers, squat jumps, and burpees.  If you incorporate these, you’ll realize, your abs work without doing actual crunches.  Also. try to do all of your exercises standing.  Your core has to brace your body, to react to the force of the resistance applied to your movements.

Lastly, pay attention to what you eat.  A lot of people think if they work out hard, they deserve a treat in the form of bad food.  Unfortunately, this is counter productive. The food you eat, when you work out hard, is JUST as important as the food you eat when you don’t.  You need to think of food as fuel if you want a six pack.  Just because something tastes good, doesn’t mean it’s good for you. That’s pretty obvious Krispy Kreme.  When you are trying to get a six pack, clean foods, such as fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, like turkey breast, chicken breast, tuna, other fish, and some dairy products like cottage cheese help the mission.  You want a six pack with no crunches?  Fried foods are a no no.  Skin on meat, is a no no.  The cleaner you eat, the quicker you will see those abs. Tracking this food that you eat can also be a great help in the quest for six packs.  Sites like Fitday.com and Dotfit.com are good sites to make sure you aren’t eating too many calories or too few, and if the balance of carbs, proteins and fat are good.

If you pay attention to these 6 things, and you follow them for a month, you will be amazed at what you can see in thirty days.  As always, there are a ton or workout programs you can follow online, I offer some on my site, like the 4 Week Six Pack Plan.    With a little effort, and preparation, you’ll have that six pack that you want.  It’s not going to come easy, but it will come.

I HATE Doing Abs!

Monday, November 1st, 2010

Yeah.  I said it.  I hate doing abs.  I’m no different than the next guy.  And that’s why I DON’T do them.  I know that’s hard to believe.  I was just like everyone else when I was younger though, doing sit-ups and crunches between commercial breaks of my favorite tv shows, doing knee raises while brushing my teeth, you know, what everyone does.  Wait.  You don’t do that?  Oh..  Ok.  Maybe I was a little weird when I was younger.  Well, here.  I did used to end every workout with about 10 minutes of six pack work.  I bought a book called Complete Book of Abs, and did the workouts in it for a while.  And I did have a pretty ripped stomach.  But guess what.  It wasn’t very fun for me either.  So I decided to stop doing it.  And now, my abs look better than they used to when I did do “abs“.  IMPOSSIBLE, you say?  I disagree.  I think you can get better abs by not doing crunches.  Do me a favor.  Stand up, and bend backwards for a second.  Now, feel your stomach.  Is it tight?  You bet it is.  This is the opposite of a crunch, so why are your abs flexed?  Doesn’t make sense huh?  But your muscles are flexed so it’s obviously working.  But I thought you had to do crunches to get abs.  Man.  Now I’m confused.  Ok.  Here’s where I’m going with this.  You can do certain things, things you don’t think play a role in developing a six pack, and they WILL help you get one.  Some of these things include diet and the exercises you do in your workout.  You aren’t going to get a six pack if you aren’t currently eating foods that serve a purpose nutritionally, so that takes care of number 1.  Let’s go to those exercises.  Take a pushup for example.  Get in pushup position. (I thought I told you this weeks blog would be interactive, no?) Ok.  now, in that pushup position, flex your butt cheeks.  Now do pushups with your butt flexed.  Do you now feel your abs?  My point is this.  If you focus on perfect form, in every exercise you do, you won’t have to worry about your abs, because they brace everything for all the movements you do.  Another example of this is jumping rope.  Do it for a couple minutes and see how your abs feel as you are jumping.  Point Tony.  So if you practice perfect form, your abs should take care of themselves.  I have tons of videos on youtube that will give you pointers on this sort of thing, and I also have a 4 week six pack plan on my site that gets you a six pack with exercises that are not called “crunches”.   My youtube channel is www.youtube.com/tonept3  and my website is www.tonycress.com  Go check them out.   Now, all you bench presssin fools who are trying to put on more weight than you can handle, drive your butt and lower back into that bench, and let your abs help you.  I think it’s more macho to have a nice six pack than to have a broken back.  Night y’all!

Getting in Shape- Have You REALLY tried “everything”?

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

Ok. So, I know it’s 3am my time, but I won’t remember everything I want to say tomorrow. I’m probably not going to remember everything I want to say now. But, I do want to address something I constantly, and consistently see when people email me. It’s late, so I won’t give you the standard sample letter, I’ll just tell you what it usually says. A person has been working out for a while now, usually less than 6 months habitually, and they have tried “everything”, but can’t seem to reduce bodyfat, gain any muscle, get really defined ab muscles. Whatever the case may be, I am sure all people say it with the best intentions. I am here to calmly, and flatly say, that those people are wrong. If you aren’t seeing the results you want, a few things could be the culprit. You may not be working hard enough, your nutrition may be off, you may be doing the wrong exercises, you may need a session with a trainer to show you the right ones, you may be eating too many calories, you may be eating too few calories, you may need to switch your routine up, or you may just need to be patient. I just made that the longest sentence in the history of planet earth’s existence, because there are a million reasons you are probably not thinking about. When I hear the “everything” excuse, to be honest, I don’t believe the next words coming out of that persons mouth. I don’t mean to be rude, or mean, but sometimes a dose of reality is what these people need. More often than not, it comes down to what people are eating, especially when it’s the last few pounds needed to come off. This isn’t easy work. It’s very difficult to reach some of these goals, but all it takes is a little dedication, and scheduling. This is just my rant, and I’ll leave it at that for today. I really should fall asleep. But before you say you’ve tried “everything”, go ahead and write down everything you’ve tried. Then send it to me. I’ll give you my honest opinion.
