What Workout Person Are You?

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

So, being a personal trainer in Las Vegas, of all places, I run into a lot of different types of clients.  I have a waitress from a nightclub, an engineer, a “dancer” , A promotional model, a valet attendant, and a customer service rep to name a few.  Obviously, they all have different jobs, and they all have different personalities.  They all work out for different reasons, and they all have different motivational factors for getting their six pack.  This brings me to ask the question in the title of  this blog.  What workout person are you?  The following explains some of the types I’ve seen over the years..

The Spring Breaker:  This is my favorite one.  These people, don’t know what the word gym is, until about February of every year.  They will be the ones who are about 30 pounds overweight, and they’ll say, “Yeah, I gotta get in shape for Cancun/Acapulco/Panama City/Miami/Iran.”  Ha ha.. you haven’t done anything all YEAR, and you think a month is going to get you all ripped?

The Overeager:  This is someone who is just starting out, but they want fitness results asap, even though they have never really worked out.  They will be the ones who are going PSYCHO on the elliptical for two and a half minutes, then pass out.  Or they grab 25 pound dumbells when they can only handle 10 pound ones, and try to disgustingly get through ten bicep curls.

The Meathead:  Everyone knows one of these.  All they do is stack on as much weight as possible, rest for 5 minutes between sets, and you will never see them on a cardio machine. It’s all about getting big, no matter what the cost.  I see this TONS in Las Vegas.

The Princess:  Another favorite of mine.  This is a girl who says they go to the gym every day, but they don’t work out.  They say, “Yeah, I’m working out with a personal trainer now.” and all they really want to do is let people know they are at the gym.  They wear their pink Juicy outfits, and their Gucci shoes……. To WORK OUT!  Seriously.  It takes a lot for me to not ask them why they are wasting their time.

The Fitness Buff:  Not all of these types are bad.  Here is a healthy, normal one.  This is the type of person who goes in the gym, tries to keep talking to a minimum, and leaves with sweat dripping down their forehead.  They don’t necessarily wear anything in particular, just stuff they don’t care to mess up.  Some people find them intimidating or maybe think they are a-holes, but for the most part, they aren’t. They just want to get in a great workout, and it seems like they are too cool to talk.  Well, they are in a gym.  They aren’t at any particular nightclub.  So, let them workout, and say hi when you see them outside the gym.

Anyway.  I have a few more types that i could write about, but I’ll save those for another post.  If you aren’t one of these, maybe you are one of a kind… Or maybe i just haven’t put the other types on this list.  Anyway..  Have a good laugh at some of these, as I’m sure all of you know a person in each category.

Personal Trainers that Love Las Vegas

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

So, I have been a personal trainer in Las Vegas for about 5 years now, 12 in total.  And it never ceases to amaze me, in this quest for fitness, that some trainers, aren’t really helping their clients, they are helping themselves.  I see that this is even more evident in Las Vegas.  Now, there are TONS of good trainers out here, and tons of people taking their clients to the next level, designing amazing work outs, great nutrition plans, and sculpting six packs.  But there are also quite a few personal trainers out here, that are basically wasting people’s time, charging a high rate because they know people have money out here, and they can get away with it.  Case in point.  I was at Las Vegas Athletic Club the other day, and I was watching a female trainer, do a superset with her client.  The superset happened to be leg extensions and Barbell Deadlifts.  Now, I don’t have a problem with either of these exercises.  I wouldn’t ever have my clients do leg extensions, but that’s another story for a different day.  But anyway, as soon as said client was done with her leg extensions, she moved into what i believe to be, the most ungodly, nightmarish attempt at a deadlift i have possibly ever seen.  Her back was similar to the St. Louis Arc, and also, very similar to Igor in the Frankenstein movies.  Her back was rounded so much, I thought maybe she was going into a tumbling routine.  And what was her trainer doing?  Oh, just staring off into space, couldn’t give a care in the world.  I almost stopped her myself, in fear of her rearranging some vertebrae, but i held back.  Not my place.  Anyway.  I watched this work out go on, and saw a few more disgusting shows of form, then i just left.  Heartbroken.  My point is, some trainers checked out a LONG time ago.  They just want their money for the session, and you can do whatever the hell you want.  Not a good thing in my book.  The question I ask, is why do these people pay those trainers?  Take home lesson for all you kiddies.  Ask for a session for free, or ask to watch them train someone else.  Just figure out what you are getting into before you make a committment to someone who works for Globo Gym.

A Las Vegas Routine For This Personal Trainer, This ISN’T.

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

On my way back to Las Vegasbuffet eating 300x225 A Las Vegas Routine For This Personal Trainer, This ISNT., from a trip to Pendleton, Oregon, and Lewiston Idaho for American Storm, I have realized a few things.  Time, in certain areas, has not progressed in 20 years, ie: no internet connection, and it is very hard to stick to a workout and nutrition schedule on the road, given some certain circumstances.  The workout part of it for me, was not hard. Being a personal trainer, i can figure out a great workout in a closet.  But for the random person staying in a hotel without fitness facilities, they could be left wondering what to do when the closest gym is 15 minutes in a car, that they probably didn’t rent.  Anyway, the problem i found, was that the only option for food for us, was the buffet.  Bad idea.  In a place where there is more dessert options than actual food, we were in trouble.  The key to all this is what you eat of course, but also what you eat FIRST.  I’ll make this short, and helpful.  Try and find all the vegetables they offer that are not cooked.  Most likely, when these people cook the veggies, they are loaded in butter and oils.  So get the raw stuff.  And just smother yourself in them:)  Then go for the lean proteins, then water, and then more veggies.

Las Vegas Personal Trainer asks, Do You All have Six Packs?

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

In my travels as a PERSONAL TRAINER, I’ve come across many things that catch my eye, whether it’s something cool, or something that should be left in the privacy of your own home.  Right now, I am going to talk about the latter.  I was in the LAS VEGAS ATHLETIC CLUB, the other day, and it wasn’t unlike any other day. Dudes were WORKING OUT, girls were doing cardio, and both sexes were socializing.  That happens alot at this gym.  But the thing i did see that really caught my eye, was not any of these things.  i saw multiple guys, in between sets, lifting up their shirts, and looking in the mirror.  Seriously?  WHAT are they looking at?  Ok.  If you have abs, you know they are there.  Right?  If you don’t, they aren’t going to magically appear in between sets. The funnier thing is, it’s not like they just got done doing a set of crunches, or bicycles, or knee raises.  They were doing random things like lat pulldown and bench, or, heaven forbid, bicep curls.  Ok.   I’m going to be honest.  I stopped my workout, for the most part, and kinda just watched.  So these guys, they don’t just do it one time.   They go to their next exercise, and do it again.  Can someone help me out with this.  What is the point exactly?  Is it they want other people to see their development?  If that’s the case, just post some pics on myspace or facebook.  That kinda fills my need! lol.  Anyway,  much appreciated if i could get some feedback on this issue.

You just need to tighten up your abs huh?

Monday, July 20th, 2009

kid with abs 225x300 You just need to tighten up your abs huh?

OK.  So, I get an email today, well, it was a message on facebook or myspace, now i can’t remember, but it went something like this.  “Hi Tony, my name is so and so, and I see that you are a personal trainer.  You got a mad tight body yo!  How do i get abs like yours?  I know my workout is on point, but I just need to tone up my abs and love handles.  Help me out bro.  I know you got tips.  Tell me how to get all cut up! Love Whoever”  So, that wasn’t EXACTLY what the message said.  But I get stuff like that every day.  And now, here is a general response to that.

Most people who write me those messages, DO NOT only have to tone up their abs and love handles.  They have GOT to realize that this isn’t a spot reducing game we are playing here when it comes to exercise.  If in fact, you are absolutely shredded everywhere, but your abs and love handles hang over your pants, then, you are kind of a freak of nature, and i don’t know what that would look like exactly.    More than likely, the case is that the person who is asking the question, needs to look at their situation in a whole body approach.. The fact is, they need to lose fat.  Period.  They WANT to lose fat, in their stomach, and “core” area, because that is the “sexy” area everyone determines a persons level of fitness from.  You can’t have defined, sexy abs, when you have fat on your arms.  I know it doesn’t sound like that correlates, but it does.  You can’t just lose fat in your stomach.  Here is the bottom line.  If you can’t see your abs, you could probably stand to lose some fat elsewhwere as well.

Now, there are certain cases, where it is people who maybe have a pound or two to lose, to get the final cuts out and actually see abs.. Usually, this has to do with diet.  I still get the people who say they are doing everything they can, and nothing is working.  Guess what.  They aren’t doing everything they can then.  It comes down to really dialing in on your diet, and paying attention to when you are eating and what you are eating.  Most people go wrong on one of those two things.

Anyway, I’m sure I could talk more about this topic, and I’m sure i will.  I suppose this is just a little taste, but your comments and questions are always welcome.  Hope you guys enjoyed this little rant tonight.
